As usual, our weather has been a bit wet for preplanned outdoor activities with our fluffy footed friends, so we haven't had any fun together yet this year. Even the group that meets at Hawaii Kai Dog Park on the first Sunday of each month has been rained out for the last two months. Hopefully the weather will be better soon and we may try to organize a hike in late April. if you have a favorite place to hike or walk with your Cavalier, please let me know.

2011 Dues

If you haven't sent in your dues yet, please send $15 per adult member and $5. per junior member to the Club at PO Box 628, Kaaawa, HI 96730. I have been collecting checks and will deposit those received next week, so please get them in. I know the amount is small, but it all adds up, so we need everyone to participate in paying dues. If you aren't sure if you paid 2010 dues last year (and there are some!), please let me know.

Upcoming AKC Dog Shows

Tropical Toy and Windward Dog Fanciers will be holding their Saturday and Sunday shows on the weekends of April 9-10 and 16-17. More of our Club dogs are entering and we have a really good time together watching these perfectly groomed Cavies. We will post the times Cavaliers are in the ring on the website as soon as we have the information, so please consider coming. Both of these are outside shows, Tropical Toy is at Thomas Square downtown and Windward is at King Intermediate in Kaneohe. Following is a picture of Teddy, who you all might remember went to live with the Commander family last year, in his Winner's picture in January. I am especially proud of Summer, who has put in the work and time to bring Teddy up to his potential. He now has 13 points and one major. One more major and he will be "Champion Teddy"!

                                Planned Event Dates for 2011

Pet Expo - Saturday and Sunday, May 7 & 8, 2011

We will again be hosting one of the most popular booths at Pet Expo this year. Show hours are from 10 to 4 each day and as usual we are requesting volunteers to man the booth for a two hour period on one of those days. Our Cavaliers are about the only dogs that are actually "benched" for visitors to our booth to see, pet and swoon over (and swoon they do!). Everyone who does booth duty always has a good time and the dogs truly enjoy it. What's not to love about talking with people about our wonderful breed and to see all the smiles. If you can do some booth duty, please let me know which day and which time slot you would like (10-12, 12-2, or 2-4 and I will make up a schedule hopefully to suit everyone. I have a foster Blenheim myself and he will be there along with my two Tri's. I bet Jordy will have a ball meeting all his new friends! We have a wire pen to let them rest during their time at the booth and also a cooler with water for both people and Cavs. We will put up the usual jeweled crown and have our Club picture board. If you have a new picture for the picture board, send to my email address. Several of our Club puppies will be entered in the Puppy Match at the Expo and that should be a lot of fun, so plan to come and cheer them on.

Summer Picnic - Waikiki Playground - Saturday, July 16, 2011

We have now been able to schedule our big Summer Picnic with the Parks Department (permits in hand). We have found through past experience that it is better to plan our gatherings after all the big events in Kapiolani Park have been scheduled so that we don't have terrible parking problems. We will have our usual potluck, Show and Tell for everyone to bring those great ideas for Cavaliers, introduce new members and new Cavaliers, and generally have a good time. We may have another Fun Match since we haven't had one of those for a while and we have some really nice new dogs in the Club. I have some really pretty ribbons to award so think about entering. No special grooming or training required,  just have fun. Everyone thinks their Cavalier is the best, so why not try for a ribbon to hang up at home!

Halloween Bash at the Beach and Annual Meeting - Saturday, October 8, 2011

Beth Worrall and her Cavie, Eli Manning, have invited us yet again to their wonderful beach house in Laie for our biggest party of the year, so put this date on your calendar right now. We will have our costume contest (no excuses - you have lots of time to plan!), fun Cavalier games and way too much good food. If anyone has a new doggie game that we haven't played before, please let me know so I can plan for it. We will certainly have "Musical Sit", "Race to Owner", "Fill the Water Cup", "Egg Race" and "Kissing Contest" (anyone think they can beat Lokelani in kissing?).

Christmas Cookie Exchange and Park Around the Park - Saturday, December 3, 2011

The Parks Department was good enough to give us a date and permit for the Christmas Party now so that everyone can put this date on the calendar as well. It is a good weekend for our party as there are no big events in Kapiolani Park. The marathon is the following weekend.

Rescues, Rehomings, Fosters and Puppies

We have had quite a few rescue situations and rehomings this year. As more and more Cavaliers are either bred in the Islands or brought in through importers, we are seeing multiple Cavaliers needing new homes for many reasons from families leaving the islands to a dog not working in a particular family. If you are willing to consider bringing a mature Cavalier into your family, please let me know so that I can put you on our list.  Sometimes it is even a dog slightly more than a puppy who turned out to be more than an individual family could handle. We have seen males and females, mostly Blenheim, as they are the most popular color, but some solids as well. I have to tell you, it is one of the most fulfilling things that I do as President of the Club to find a new home for a loving Cavalier. One of our members took on a  13 year old Blenheim male late last year who has turned out to have more energy than her younger dogs and now has a fabulous coat, especially his tail!

There is also a "Puppy Wish List" that I maintain for those of you who are considering adding a puppy to your family, so be sure to let me know and we can help you find a breeder who cares for their dogs and puppies and have healthy puppies with parents that you can visit. Please be very wary of purchasing a puppy from a "Puppy Swap Meet" or other public event where you see nothing of the parents or of the pedigree. We know of one very prolific breeder on Oahu who has bred the father to the daughter and is selling the puppies through the newspaper and at Puppy Swap Meets (I have seen the pedigree). The potential for health issues rises dramatically in this type of breeding.
