September 16, 2006 General Membership Meeting, Potluck and Doggy Playday

By Kaye Walsh, Secretary

Thank you to everyone who attended our wonderful party and meeting at the Johnson home. Camilla and Toppy were wonderful hostesses (assisted by Mom and Dad, Melanie and Gary of course). The weather was perfect, the trade winds blew and there was a lot of delicious food for both the people and the guests of honor, our Cavaliers. We had 53 attendees of the human variety but I forgot to count the Cavaliers – next time I’ll count the Cavs, forget the people!

At our General Meeting we inducted four new members, some who were guests at the last party and we had several guests who we hope will become members soon. There were also several new puppy family members making their first party appearances including Violet Rohrbacher, Meg Arcate and Guinness Hodge.

Also at the General Meeting we amended the Club By-laws to reduce the number of directors from seven to five. At the December General Meeting (which we decided would be a “Walk Around Kapiolani Park” with Meeting and refreshments to follow – date certain to follow) we will elect new officers and directors for the coming year. Please contact me if you are interested in serving on the Board. A discussion was held regarding activities, serving as officers and directors by new individuals for the coming year, participating as a Club in next year’s Pet Expo, and obtaining educational speakers for our meetings.

Our costume contest had quite a few entries and the winner was Angus Roberts, the bagpipe player, complete with kilt and bagpipes (including music). What will the Roberts think of next! Molly as Paris Hilton was the grand prize winner at the last contest. Get ready for the December meeting when we will have another contest. Brigitta says she is taking a break from the contest next time.

We then proceeded on to our Potluck with plenty of food and Gary Johnson as grillmeister kept those hamburgers and hot dogs coming. No one went home hungry, including all those starving Cavaliers who coaxed plenty of bites from everyone.

Our out-of-town guest Judge for the Fun Match, Deborah Motley, arrived from the airport in time to enjoy our Potluck and afterwards we assembled 12 males and 11 females for the judging. Debbie was in town for a convention (and missing her Cavaliers), isn’t a true judge, but is a breeder and has taken her Cavs to champion. She really knew her business and carefully put them through their paces. Debbie brought some special prizes from Minnesota and awarded them to the oldest Cavs present. She also brought us a signed print of the logo from the National show in Atlanta this year, which will be part of the drawings at the December meeting. We again awarded those beautiful ribbons with the club logo buttons. Best of Match went to Atom Tajima and lst Prize for females was Molly Roberts. We awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize ribbons to both boys and girls. In addition to the Best of Match green ribbon, Atom was awarded a glass suncatcher sent to us by the national club, American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club. These were awarded at the national show and each regional was sent one to be used by the club as a prize locally.

As before, Gerald Luke acted as our official photographer and took many pictures. He had a list going of all those who would like a CD with party pictures and mailed them out to those who requested them at the party by First Class class mail on Thursday, Sept. 28. They should arrive in 3 or 4 days. If you did not get on the list but would like a CD, please send him an email at  or telephone him at 737-0073 and he will be glad to send you one. The club is paying for the postage, so please don’t be shy about asking.

Several items were left behind as everyone departed around 6:30 PM with those exhausted Cavaliers, so please telephone Melanie Johnson at 235-9007 to reclaim them:

1.        large paper bag from American Eagle Outfitters containing a blue and white flowered quilted blanket

2.        black "think tank" photo.com bag on a belt for carrying camera equipment

3.        pair of clear salad tongs - one piece

4.        gentleman’s straw hat with floral hatband

Also, at the last party someone left a nice flowered soft sided ice chest.

A good time was had by all and everyone is looking forward to our next get together in December. There will be some new puppy attendees as the Armstrongs have two new puppies, Duke and Duchess, and there was at least one puppy who was just a little too young to make this event. We are looking forward to meeting them in December.

There are shows coming up shortly, so please take a look at our Website to get the particulars and come down to watch your favorites.  Our webmaster, Jim Arcate, is always looking for new pictures and stories to post so please submit some pictures for Cavalier of the Week to Jim at arcate@msn.com.

Looking forward to seeing you all in December.
